The work

This engraving, after a composition by Peter Paul Rubens, illustrates the Book of Job in the Bible: God allows Satan to test the faith of Job, a righteous man, who loses everything he owns and whose body is covered in sores.

At the centre, Job is thrown backwards, one foot resting on a broken column. Three winged demons are about to stab and burn him. On the right stands his wife, who urges him to curse God. At the bottom, the plate bears a verse from the Book of Job: Homo natus de muliere, brevi vivens tempore, “man that is born of a woman is of few days”.

In the Heritage range, this work is linked to Tom Cuzor, who recognises Lucas Vorsterman as an influence.

Original work: Lucas Vorsterman the Elder (Flemish, 1595-1675), after Peter Paul Rubens (Flemish, 1577-1640), Job Tormented by Demons and Abused by His Wife, engraving on laid paper, sheet 39.1 × 27 cm. Impression in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, gift of Frank Anderson Trapp (accession number 2004.128.46). Other impressions are held notably by the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. Public domain work, digital image from Artvee (artvee.com).

The artist

Rebel angels, martyrs and demons: discover Lucas Vorsterman, the great engraver of the Flemish Baroque.

Lucas Vorsterman the Elder was born in 1595 in Zaltbommel, in the Netherlands. He is one of the great engravers of the Baroque era. Around 1618, he joined the workshop of Peter Paul Rubens in Antwerp. From 1619 to 1621, he was even the master’s sole engraver. Rubens had launched a major print project to spread his paintings, and he entrusted Vorsterman with engraving several of his major works, including The Fall of the Rebel Angels (1621). The two men were close: Rubens even agreed to be godfather to the engraver’s eldest son.

In 1621, a violent dispute drove them apart. The circumstances remain unclear: it is not known whether there was an actual fight, but Rubens’s lawyers obtained a protection order against the engraver. A rumour of the time even claimed that Vorsterman had nearly stabbed Rubens.

In 1624, Vorsterman went to England, where he lived on the patronage of royalty and nobility. He returned to Antwerp in 1630. Anthony van Dyck then chose him among the engravers of his Iconography, a famous series of portraits of illustrious men, for which Vorsterman engraved 22 of the 80 original plates. He also trained many pupils, such as Paulus Pontius and his own son, Lucas Vorsterman the Younger. Late in life, he lost his sight and lived in poverty, supported by the Antwerp Guild of St Luke until his death in 1675.
