The work

Alexis Bacci, a Franco-Italian author known for horror stories that blend manga with a European sensibility, presents a fantastical scene inspired by Japanese folklore, where beauty and menace answer one another.

A gigantic white cat, jaws open on razor-sharp fangs, dominates the composition. Its bright red eyes and the scarlet sign traced on its forehead make it a true yokai, a demonic spirit sprung from Japanese legend. At its feet, three women in kabuki make-up, wearing red chequered kimonos and black sashes, struggle in a tangle of red threads. Their dance-like poses and frightened gazes give the scene a theatrical tension.

The palette, pared back to black, white, grey and red, creates an immediate graphic impact; the clean line and bold flat areas recall Japanese woodblock prints reinterpreted through contemporary comics. The image will appeal to lovers of Japanese culture, yokai, horror manga and graphic illustration, and will bring character to a living room, an office or a creative space.

This art print is produced by the Kyodai Print workshop on 210 gsm Fine Art paper. It is available in 30 × 40 cm, 50 × 70 cm and 70 × 100 cm.

The artist

Between 1970s manga, Italian-style horror and esotericism, Alexis Bacci draws dark, spellbinding worlds unlike any other.

Alexis Bacci is an author of French-Italian descent who graduated from Gobelins in 2001. He created Soir de match, a spin-off of the Lastman series, for which he received the Daruma award for best international manga at Japan Expo 2019. The same year saw the release of Captain Death, a metaphysical slasher noted for its references to 1970s sci-fi manga. In 2022 he published Dérives with Glénat, a dark tale in the vein of Italian horror cinema, recounting the underwater odysseys of elderly Japanese pearl divers. Then, in 2025, came Possessions, an esoteric and autobiographical thriller, with Glénat.
