The work

With this blue-drenched illustration, Alexis Bacci brings love and death together in a scene both tender and macabre, as if to remind us that the strongest feelings sometimes bloom in the darkest places.

At the centre, a young couple kiss passionately beneath a red heart floating above them. The girl, on tiptoe, lifts one leg as in the great scenes of cinema. All around, skeletons emerge from their graves and watch, leaning on the headstones. Their epitaphs, full of dark humour, such as “Here lies a liar” or “Dead men tell no tales”, add a touch of irony.

In the background, an angel statue with outspread wings, entwined with brambles, keeps a sorrowful watch over the cemetery, while in the foreground two giant skulls frame the composition like a theatre curtain. Rendered almost entirely in shades of blue, the image lets only the red of the heart burst through. A piece for lovers of dark romanticism, offbeat Valentine’s Days and alternative comics – a gift for those whose love is till death and beyond.

This art print is produced by the Kyodai Print workshop on 210 gsm Fine Art paper. It is available in 30 × 40 cm, 50 × 70 cm and 70 × 100 cm.

The artist

Between 1970s manga, Italian-style horror and esotericism, Alexis Bacci draws dark, spellbinding worlds unlike any other.

Alexis Bacci is an author of French-Italian descent who graduated from Gobelins in 2001. He created Soir de match, a spin-off of the Lastman series, for which he received the Daruma award for best international manga at Japan Expo 2019. The same year saw the release of Captain Death, a metaphysical slasher noted for its references to 1970s sci-fi manga. In 2022 he published Dérives with Glénat, a dark tale in the vein of Italian horror cinema, recounting the underwater odysseys of elderly Japanese pearl divers. Then, in 2025, came Possessions, an esoteric and autobiographical thriller, with Glénat.
